Open skies-Free flows-Intelligent screen anywhere anytime must be the rule. This vital concept must be swiftly adopted globally.It is the key to unleash unprecedented trade flows,positive political changes and healthy socio-economic developments worldwide.

Outdated laws,rules and practices must be discarded and replaced forthwith.Post 9/11 and Global Financial Tsunami,the focus must be on customers first.

The recent Wall Street financial earthquake followed by the White House political earthquake within a month should make all sit up and unite to help all to grow better,faster and greater in magnanimity,courage and perseverence.

New and better ways to speed up global trade via open skies and intelligent screens must be carefully thought out and implemented in a borderless world of global business networks.

Policymakers must take proactive steps to facilitiate faster trade flows via the powerful business buzz of more effective and efficient air cargo flights.

I glimpsed the above insights at the just concluded three-day 24th International Air Cargo Forum and Exposition at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.Malaysia'S Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Mohd. Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, officiated the closing ceremony at the Gala Dinner hosted by Maskargo at Crowne Plaza Mutiara Ballroom in Kuala Lumpur on November 6,2008.

After listening to the voices of several leading industry experts,I believe a fresh megatrend of global air cargo movements is taking shape in a new long-term global economic consolidation.

Despite the full-blown global financial turmoil,the ACF Forum,organized by The International Air Cargo Association(TIACA),attracted record turnout of exhibitors and a distinguished gathering of key representatives of leading airports,air cargo carriers,handlers, brokers,shippers, logistics integrators,aviation authorities,customs,aircraft manufacturers, freight forwarders, trade publishers and aviation consulting service companies at its world class trade fair.

Among the major topics,problems and issues addressed and discussed were:-

*Market Prospects for the Region, moderated by Reporter Bruce Stanley of the Wall Street Journal Asia;

*Harmonization of Security Standards - Asia's Perspectives, moderated by Chairman Jack Boisen of TIACA;

*Environment Concerns - Truth or Consequences, moderated by Editor Simon Keeble of Air Cargo World;

*Market-Driven Challenges in the Region, moderated by Adjunct Associate Professor Dr. Paul W. Forster of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's School of Business.

I had the sterling honour to renew contact with Mas Chairman Tan Sri Dr. Mohamed Munir Abdul Majid.Indeed,I have gained invaluable awareness, appreciation and understanding of the significant contributions of the air cargo and logistics industry to global trade development.

It was a great pleasure and privilege to get to know key industry leaders such as Chairman Jack Boisen of TIACA, Treasurer George F. Johnson and Operations Director Michelle Dempsey of TIACA,Larry Coyne, CEO of Coyne Airways Limited,Publisher Steve Prince and Editor Simon Keeble of Air Cargo World, Publisher Ursula F.Schmeling of rittman/ITJ-Logistics Worldwide,
CEO Iqbal H. Qureshi of Kuwait's Bahman Aviation, Shipping and Logistics,President Paul Overvoorde of France's Cargo World,President J.Michael Webber of Webber Air Cargo,Managing Director Frank R.Newman,Fedex Airline/airfreight Sales and Alliances,
Senior Vice President Tom Wheelwright of DHL,Regional Director Olof Rapp of Rolls-Royce,
Regional Sales Director Jussi Hoikka of Airbus,President Howard A. Jones of Canada's Network Cargo Systems,Managing Director Francesco Traverso Tardy of Italy's Cismat, Chairman F.E. (Freek) van Zoeren of the Management Board of Customs of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport/Amsterdam Seaport and Marketing Director Genaro J.Pena of Houston Airport System.I interacted intensively with many others at the air cargo buzz.

In the highly competitive air cargo business world, speed,cost and reliability are key success factors.

To stay ahead, key players must network,outsource and form new strategic alliances.

According to DHL's Public Policy head Tom Wheelwright,who served as Senior Political Adviser to former Australian Prime Minister, Hon.Paul Keating and Australian Senator in 1995-96, 30 million shipments are done everyday around the globe.

Any small delays or hiccups at one point of the supply chain can result in huge losses at another point.

Hence , key agencies such as customs, immigration, police, criminal intelligence bureau and civil aviation authorities must work closely together to streamline and smoothen air cargo trade flows.

Governments should adopt holistic co-ordinated and balanced approach to make security screening and intelligence sharing a breeze.USA,Japan,Australia and Singapore have taken proactive measures to promote,strengthen and enhance security at airports and flights to counter the threats of terrorism and thefts, post September 11.

For DHL, the best customers in Asia are small and medium enterprises(SME).This is because they give the best profit margins and are the most loyal.

The urgency for governments to co-operate and collaborate across borders to assure the safety and security of passengers and cargoes via more effective and efficient screening and clearance at airports and flights must be given due consideration and weight.

The key issues and problems raised at the ACF Forum include the requirements and impact of the EU's new Emissions Trading Scheme (EMS); the impact of the airfreight industry on the environment;the mandatory US legistlation on security screening for 100 per cent of all air cargo by August 2010 and challenges of global economic recession.

Among the steps proposed to improve business are:-

*Adapt swiftly to change;

*Create new demand with more cost-effective services and products;

*Just do it simple;

*Offer customer a fair deal;

*Build deep and broad strategic networks;

*Harness the latest technologies to assure customer satisfaction;

*Carve unique leadership niches

*Adopt China plus One Strategy;

*Reduce distribution costs via multi-networks;

*Focus on excellence via cycle time acceleration;

*Unite to help all via trade liberalization; and

*Stress customer first, NOT industry first to avoid protectionism;

In reality, the total aviation industry contributed 2.3 per cent of global CO2 emissions in 2002, stressed TIACA Chairman Jack Boisen.
